ABOUT US

A legacy of service since 1956.

The Institute of Social Service was established with a vision of creating institutions and initiatives that respond to the educational, social and welfare needs of people across India.

Nearly seven decades later, that commitment continues.

Our work has evolved with society, but the fundamental belief remains unchanged:

Every person deserves dignity. Every community deserves opportunity.

“Culture is the arts elevated to a set of beliefs.”
— Thomas Wolfe

OUR STORY

The story of the Institute of Social Service is closely intertwined with the development of professional social work and community service in Mumbai.

Registered on 24 October 1956 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, the Institute was established to develop and support educational and charitable institutions serving people irrespective of caste, creed, race or religion. Its objectives were ambitious — from education and social work to welfare centres, dispensaries, industrial schools, family-life programmes and children's welfare services. Over the decades, these objectives evolved into a living network of education, community development and social service.

Today, the Institute continues this legacy through its work at Chuim Community Centre, Jeevandhara in Kolad and Nirmala Niketan Hostel.

The needs may change. The commitment remains.
